When we did the rush job to remove emails from user topics, I made a filter to prevent the email from ever being written into the user topic. This is not a good thing; it should be configurable (yes, I know, another config option; some day we really need to garden those)

Yep, would be great. Next step is of course to choose whether the two addresses should be kept in sync programmatically, or whether we can just doc us out of the two "conceptually" a bit different e-mail addresses. Let's save that for later.

My thinking is running as follows. From a user perspective, there are two types of user environments; ones where users personal details may need to be hidden, and ones where they need not. Emails are only the tip of the iceberg; there may be other user details, such as age, sex, or credit card number, that need to be hidden.

In addition, password managers have the option of storing personal details about users in personal topics if there is no support in their password databases for storing extra info. But the fact that the details are stored in the user topic should be irrelevant to the rest of TWiki, which should always rely only on the password manager to retrieve/set that information.

So, I am doing two things:

  1. adding a user to %USERINFO so that the personal topic of a different user can be retrieved. For example %USERINFO{"FionaBruce" format="Mail: $emails Tel: $tel Mobile: $mobile"}%
  2. cleaning up the interface to "hidden details" so that they are filtered from the write-to-topic in Register.pm, but are passed to the password manager instead.

DEVELOP and TWiki4.

Should this be driven from TWiki:Codev.InternetMode vs IntranetMode?
