develop.twiki.org produces an internal server errror. Apache error_log has this:

[Mon Jan 16 18:50:46 2006] [error] [client 71.141.155.229] malformed header from script. Bad header=webmaster... User unknown: /path/to/develop/public_html/cgi-bin/register

I got the "How to activate your TWiki registration" e-mail.

An incorrect webmaster address should produce a nicer error message.

This is a follow-up on Item1179

-- PTh

I don't think the error is in the webmaster address. I tracked it as far as I could when it was first reported, and AFAICT the SMTP code is throwing a die exception. But it needs someone with the rights to write to the installation on ~develop to debug it - which means you or Sven.

CC

Related: On the webmaster e-mail default address we really should use one of the default 4 domains listed in http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2606.html (TLDs for Testing, & Documentation Examples), instead of just webmaster:

webmaster@domainNOSPAM.invalid or webmaster@exampleNOSPAM.com are both OK with me (the first won't go anywhere, the latter will work but e-mail will be lost if not updated).

-- SP

Changed default webmaster addess to webmaster@domainNOSPAM.invalid. SVN 8338

Someone needs to check if that resolves the problem.

CC

Creation of Main.DeleteMeItem1422Test was without any surprises now.

But still the error message might be displayed nicer when there's an error in the e-mail subsystem (for other reasons).

-- SP

Well, there is a try-catch around the SMTP send that should have caught the error, but for some reason it didn't. I couldn't debug any further because I couldn't reproduce it on my own platform, and I don't have the access rights on the ~develop platform to debug it there. So until someone with that sort of access has a look, this has to remain open.

CC

The incorrect error reporting should be investigated and fixed. It can be reproduced by specifying an invalid e-mail address for the webmaster e-mail address.

-- PTh

I'm sorry, there is NO WAY i'm going to poke around on this horrid little host to figure out which tiny little misconfiguration is causing the problem. There are way too many details that are wrong on this computer for it to be worth investigating - ok, thats an exagration - but basically, this host is so broken, its unlikly to be TWiki, and i don't have the death wish to look into it at this time.

SD

Then this needs to be deferred.

CC

OK, lets leave it deferred, although it is unfortunate to ship a product that can generate internal server errors.

Sven: You missed my point: I do not care so much that the registration works on develop.twiki.org, but I do care about shipping a high quality product.

Undeferred, post Dakar CC
This applies only to the bugbase, so changing the attribution.

CC

No, this applies to the engine. A nice error message should be displayed instead of an internal server error on a failed registration.

-- PTh

There have been a lot of changes to the registration and users code, and I can't reproduce anything like this using invalid email addresses. I don't think any further action is required. if anyone can reproduce the problem, please re-open the report with test case details.
